Tried chat for the first time in the Library 2.0 window. The library gang was offline, however, you can leave an offline message for your contact to view later.
Most libraries have an "Ask a librarian" link to answer questions from patrons. IM requires a staff member on board at particular days and hours. I can see where it could be very effective for instruction (especially around assignment deadlines), for online classes, meetings etc.
